Among them is Robert McPhee, a man who proves that with hard work, determination and some skilful juggling, anything is possible!

Robert, 43, from Paisley, successfully managed to balance a full time job, family life and his studies to emerge with a BSc in IT, with distinction.

"It was hard work at times - but I like a challenge," he grinned.

Robert, who is an IT officer with Glasgow City Council, did an HND in IT at Reid Kerr College in 1991, but had always planned to study for a degree in the subject.

"I never really had the opportunity to do it, or the time, so eventually, I decided to fund it myself and do it at night classes," he explained. "It was a really interesting course, and I hope it will also help me to progress in my career - I am an ambitious person, and eventually I hope to be able to do a Masters in the subject."

Robert's wife, Lesley, and son, Jordan - who is studying internet technology at UWS - will be proudly joining in the celebrations at today's ceremony in the Coats Memorial Baptist Church.

"I'm looking forward to it - it's been a huge challenge, but I have enjoyed it," added Robert.

The University is awarding an Honorary Doctorate today, to Mark Selway, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of leading Scots multinational engineering firm, the Weir Group plc.

Mark, who was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1959, is a FTSE 150 chief executive with more than 15 years' experience on public company boards.

Before joining Weir as CEO in 2001, he held a number of key senior posts with leading organisations across the globe, including Scheffenacker AG in Stuttgart, Germany and Britax North America Inc in Michigan, USA.

The Weir Group is structured in three sector-focused divisions - Weir Minerals, Weir Oil & Gas and Weir Power & Industrial - and has revenue of £1.3billion, 9000 employees and 69 companies with trading operations in 42 countries.
