A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl has become the latest victim of swine flu in Greater Glasgow.
She is understood to have fallen ill at her home in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, and was confirmed as having the virus after doctors carried out swab tests.
The news came after the partner of the first person in the UK to die from swine flu paid tribute to his "beautiful son" after the couple's premature baby also died.
Fifteen-day-old Jack died last night in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley - the day after his mother Jacqueline Fleming, 38, died from the H1N1 virus and other health problems in the same hospital.
Ms Fleming, of Carnwadric, Glasgow, gave birth to Jack 11 weeks early on June 1. The baby never contracted swine flu.
Her long-term partner, William McCann, said: "My beautiful son was born on 1st June, 2009, 11 weeks early. He suffered from a number of complications and, despite his brave fight, he passed away earlier this evening. Coming so soon after the death of his mum, this is an extremely distressing and difficult time for our family"
Ms Fleming was also the mother of a son aged 18 and one of primary school age.
She is the first death to be reported outside the Americas, where at least 145 people have died from swine flu.
The three-year-old girl who has swine flu is a pupil at Glenwood Nursery in Giffnock.
A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said she was recovering well. The council said the nursery would stay open because the youngster had not spent any time there while suffering from the virus.
Letters have been sent to parents advising them and also telling them no children will be given the anti-viral drug Tamiflu.
A further 71 cases of swine flu have been confirmed by GPs in Scotland, bringing the total to 569.
All the new cases are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS area.
In England, the Health Protection Agency said another 59 cases had been confirmed.
