RANGERS' midfielder Maurice Edu says he was racially abused by fans after last night's European Champions League defeat.

The 23-year-old African-American did not play during the 4-1 loss against Romanian side Unirea Urziceni, but he said on his page on the social networking site Twitter that he was targeted by his club's supporters as he left the stadium.

Edu wrote: "Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I'm getting in my car. SMH (shaking my head)."

Edu has more than 76,000 people following him on the social networking site.

It is not the first time he has been targeted by racial taunts.

In August, Edu hit back after abuse was posted on his page. One keyboard Celtic fan - nicknamed Chizops - is reported to have written a message littered with racist insults.

The player immediately deleted the comment but not before many of his fans spotted it.

He wrote in response: "It's sad n embarrassing that people follow me so they can write racist comments. SMH. It's 09 people, let's grow up n mature a lil bit."

Edu uses the site regularly and even asked followers to help him choose a new hairstyle for the official team photo.
