THIS city centre crossroads has once again been named Glasgow's most dangerous stretch of road.

THIS city centre crossroads has once again been named Glasgow's most dangerous stretch of road.

The blackspot - at the junction of Argyle Street, Union Street and Jamaica Street - has the worst safety record in the city, with 28 accidents in which people were injured over the past three years.

The number of accidents has risen - despite the council taking action to improve road markings at the busy site.

In the previous three-year period, 24 incidents were recorded at the location.

The junction at Stockwell Street and the Trongate was named the second most dangerous stretch of road, with 15 accidents, by the city council's accident investigation and prevention team.

However, this was among a number of sites which recorded a fall in accidents over the past six years.

The total number of accidents at Glasgow's worst accident blackspots has dropped by almost a third overall - from 713 to 496.

Council chiefs insisted the city's roads are the safest they've ever been.

Four out of five of the most dangerous sites identified by the council were in the city centre, including the junction at Gordon Street, Union Street and Renfield Street, with 14 accidents.

Outside the city centre, the worst blackspot was Paisley Road West at Berryknowes Road, with 14 accidents.

Motoring organisation the AA welcomed the drop in accidents but urged the council's road safety team to re-examine the city's most dangerous junction because it has experienced a rise.

Andrew Howard, AA head of road safety, said: "If the figure has increased this is cause for concern.

"We hope the engineers are already sitting down and working out how to improve safety further at this site."

Last year an 11-year-old boy had a lucky escape after he was hit by a bus as he crossed the Jamaica Street and Union Street junction. He suffered cuts to his face and bruising.

The list is compiled of junctions where eight or more injury accidents have occurred since January 2005.

When it was last compiled, 61 accident blackspots were identified, compared with 51 this time.

During 2007 there were 1800 road traffic accidents across the city, resulting in 2164 injuries - the lowest figures since 1994, said the council.

There were 14 fatalities, of which nine were pedestrians and eight were over the age of 60.

Councillor Euan McLeod, convener of environmental policy development, said: "At no time in modern Glasgow have our roads been as safe as they are today.

"We are setting ourselves extremely challenging targets that outstrip all government figures.

"We have asked officers to report on injury blackspots and will study each site to see if intervention could further reduce accidents."
