GLASGOW got its toes tapping and its dancing shoes on as the city's music festival swung into action at the weekend.
Up to 7000 contestants - mostly schoolchildren - are set to compete in the annual showcase of music, drama, speech and dance.
The festival was first held in 1911 and has increased in popularity ever since. Today it attracts competitors from throughout Britain as well as the United States and Canada.
The two-week event began on Saturday and is being staged across three sites - the Royal Concert Hall, Woodside Halls and Renfield St Stephen's Church.
Categories range from playing traditional instruments to news reading, and from Scottish country dancing to composition.
In the early competition, the Buchanan School of Dancing from Rutherglen was among those who hit the heights, taking top spot in the 12 and under and 10 and under sections of the Scottish Country Dancing.
All festival events are open to the public, with entry fees ranging from £3 to £6.
The Evening Times will also be there, with daily reports and results appearing both in print and online.
Festival chairman Robert MacDonald said: "The number of people taking part makes the festival special.
"The performers get the experience of playing in public and also get some specialist advice and encouragement from our expert adjudicators."
Glasgow Music Festival is part of the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. More than a million competitors take part in affiliated festivals every year.
