A CITY law firm is sending two tonnes of books to Malawi.

BJ Gateley Wareing, on West Regent Street, and its offices across Scotland are sending 84 cases of books to the Malawi Law Society to be used as a reference for lawyers and the general public.

The books, numbering in their hundreds, have been housed at the law firm's library in Edinburgh since the 1870s.

Alastair Shepherd, a partner at HBJ Gateley Wareing, said: "We are delighted to be helping lawyers in other parts of the world. This activity forms part of our corporate social responsibility as a firm.

"As someone born in Africa, it is great for us to be putting something back into an African nation with such strong Scottish ties."

The books will be kept at the Malawi Law Society's head office in Blantyre, named after the Lanarkshire birthplace of explorer David Livingstone.
