Templeton Carpet Factory in the 1930s
LET'S get the joke over with – the staff at Glasgow's Templeton Carpet Factory in the 1930s look undaunted by the 'scale' of their task!
They were creating this floor-covering for the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, ready to be sent south to the auditorium which still offers a popular programme of entertainment today. It was a team effort for the workers, though we don't know if they enjoyed any music while they worked...
The factory was completed in 1892 for James Templeton, from Paisley, to produce Axminster carpets for state buildings and smaller homes across the country.
It also produced floor coverings for luxury liners, including the Titanic, and even made a special carpet for the Coronation in 1953.
