CRUISE is one of Glasgow's best known fashion retailers, providing shoppers with a mix of high-end classics as well as stand-out designs.

Launched in 1981, the store specialises in luxury brands, from Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Choo to French Connection and Barbour.

RACHEL LOXTON met some of the staff to discover their style and shopping secrets.

Ruth McGlynn, 18, from Elderslie, is a fashion assistant in footwear and bags.

"I like a lot of clean lines, masculine tailoring and monochromatic styles.

"I like to stick to one colour and layer a lot.

"I love Cos, Zara and All Saints and look for simple basics.

"I know a lot of people who spend loads of money on high street brands but I prefer to save up and buy a really good piece.

"I like to invest in clothing and go for classic fashion.

"My parents really like to dress well so I'm influenced by what they wear. I wear a lot of my mum's clothes too.

"I bought a pair of black strappy shoes from Zara recently. I get really excited about shoes.

"I love Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Celine creative director Phoebe Philo.

"I like girls who know how to dress and don't follow fashion from season to season.

"My shoes have been an investment buy and I wear them with everything. I've got a little black dress that I love too.

"There's so many types of people in Glasgow, people dress however they want.

"Some people like a sky high shoe and some go for a kitten but everyone looks great."

TOP TIP: "Keep things simple and invest in ."

Robin Smyth, 26, from Gourock, works in the premium menswear department

"My style is quite formal but I love textures and tones and neutral colours.

"I think accessories should be colourful.

"It's so easy to dress well as a guy, it should always be understated. If you have a nice cut you'll always look uncomfortable.

"Cos is the best shop in Glasgow if you want to buy into fashion.

"In Cruise a lot of the clothing is pieces you'll have in your wardrobe for years but you can always cut corners elsewhere.

"Style is personal, you make the clothes what they are, the clothes don't make you. You make them extraordinary.

"The last thing I bought was a cream blazer for summer from Cos. I'll wear that with black denims or acid wash denims.

"I love Gucci, I think it's the best brand. It's got an energy and vibrancy about it.

"I think everyone in Glasgow is quite individual

"If you're confident in what you wear and always wear clothes then it will show."

TOP TIP: "It's nice to go to shops where you're pushed out of your comfort zone and take other peoples' advice."

Trousers, £390, Dior

Boots, Jimmy Choo, bought when travelling

Phyllis Williams, 27, from the West End, works in the footwear and accessories department.

"I try to mix new with old so I buy pieces from the high street or Cruise and I mix it from vintage finds from Glasgow's West End.

"I go for Zara and Topshop but I try to buy investment pieces.

"I don't like to follow everyone else.

"I go to We Love to Boogie's £10 Thrift Store on Great Western Road and I love the stores in De Courcy's Arcade.

"The last thing I bought was a skirt from the £10 Thrift Store. It's full length with pinks and pastels.

"I love this top I'm wearing. The bright colours really work on my skintone and I'll wear it all summer.

"I think Glasgow is very creative, everyone has very different styles.

"You've got the hip hop style and the more glamorous ladies then you have ladies with Doc Martins."

TOP TIP: "When I dress I try to go for something I'm comfortable in. So I would just say just make you're feeling it or it will show."

Andrew Ferguson, 29, from the east end, is a floor manager at the mainline Cruise store.

"I would stay my style is quite simple. I stick to plain navies and whites.

"I'm always in a white Tshirt, I never wear coloured Tshirts.

"The last thing I bought was a Stone Island overshirt from Cruise 223.

"That was £250. I probably spend 70% of my wages on clothes after my bills.

"I think it's important to dress well.

"My most important thing is looking good. I think it's quite a northern thing and quite a male thing.

"I think males spend more money on clothes than ladies. Girls can buy a lot of things in Topshop and Primark but men spend more money on a product that will last.

"Buying a jacket that is £700 for me – I know I'll have that for 10 years instead of buying five jackets for £100.

"I do a lot of online shopping and I buy trainers from Size.

"I'm at the age that I'm not going to grow anymore so I can spend more.

"I constantly buy Nike trainers. I've got over 100 pairs. They're so comfy and they can go with anything.

"I get trainers in all sorts of shapes and colours.

"There's people who take a chance in Glasgow, maybe like myself, and mix things up.

"But then there's guys who all dress exactly the same, the Joey Essex type crowd."

TOP TIP: "I think people should take a chance. Don't care what anyone else says."

Louise Nellany, from the south side, works in the menswear department.

"I would say my style is androgenous cuts with a feminine twist.

"I've got quite a boyish shape so masculine cuts suit me but there's always some kind of twist like the sleeve or the zip detail that makes it more feminine.

"The last thing I bought was a Prada clutch in Florence in a Prada outlet. It was reduced to 130 euros from 480. Love a bargain.

"In Glasgow, other than obviously Cruise, I love Zara and Cos.

"I love that Scandinavian style because the cuts are masculine. They do nice clean lines.

"I can't live without a blazer. I've got about 40-45 blazers.

"My favourite is probably an old Vivienne Westwood one I got in a warehouse sale.

"Glasgow has an eclectic mix of fashions. It's quite sporty or it's very glam. I don't think there's anything in between, it's quite extreme.

"Being in the menswear department I notice a lot of the guys like the commercial pieces like Dolce and Gabanna, Dior.

"Guys in Glasgow like a logo. They like to show what brand they're wearing.

"Or they go for very elegant: A nice crisp white shirt and tailored jacket.

I've got six brothers so I'm used to be surrounding by loads of guys."

TOP TIP: "I think it's better to have one great quality piece of clothing than lots of throwaway clothes.

"Save and persevere because it's good to invest. And take good care of your clothes."

Louise is wearing dress, £1300, Victoria Beckham
