It's 20 years since Muhammad Ali visited Glasgow for a book signing in Waterstones. To celebrate, we take a look back at the day the boxing legend kept his promise and returned to the city.

Ali was once the best-known person in the world and in 1965 he had promised to return to Glasgow following his fight with Jimmy Ellis and Cody Jones at Paisley Ice Rink, a vow that he kept when he came to the city for the signing of Mohammad Ali - A Thirty Year Journey at the Waterstones Union Street store on November 19 1993.

Thousands of Scots fans queued for hours to meet Ali, who happily posed with his army of fans but barely spoke during the signing.

Fans were not left disappointed as the legend, who has Parkinsons Disease, signed boxing gloves, photographs and old programmes of his bouts in Britain as well as books during the event.

For one fan, John Plott, from Renfrew, the meeting was the final part of an astonishing hat-trick, who was blessed by the Pope and met Pele in the run-up to the event.

Plott said: "It has been an amazing few weeks. I can hardly believe my luck.

"The Pope blessed me in Rome and I have to say I got as much of a buzz as when I met Mohammad Ali."

John Cairney, department manager at the Waterstones store, said: "The response has been much bigger than we expected. A couple of thousand people met the champ."
