FORGET the Great British Bake Off, this was the Great Scottish Cake Off.

These students at the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, better known as the 'Dough School', were intent on adding the final touches to their tasty wedding cake creations.

Royal icing - delicious when done properly, like concrete if got wrong - added the armoured casing to the cakes.

The college, now part of Glasgow Caledonian University, was responsible for teaching generations of Scottish cooks and domestic science teachers.

So, the next time you tuck into a bowl of your granny's lentil soup, rip into a steaming steak pie or pour cream over an apple crumble, look heavenwards and say a silent thank you to these early MasterChefs.
