SOMEHOW we can't imagine this stern Glasgow wifey ever using one of today's supermarket self-check-outs.

Gloved and hatted, and buttoned-up to the chin, she is the very image of sensible shopper. You can bet she checked her change, too.

In today's self-service world, we forget that personal service was once the hallmark of a proper shop.

There were no cheery 'hellos', or first names here. The man behind the counter would address you as 'sir' or 'ma'am' and wait on you hand and foot.

Neither were there many pre-packed goods, apart from jars and tins. Cold meats, cheeses and butter would be weighed and sliced to order, meaning, while it might have been a more personal service, shopping also took a lot longer.
