YOU can almost hear the hustle and bustle in this evocative 1950s picture of rush hour on the Glasgow Subway.

Bunnets, headscarves and school caps are all in evidence as the crowds do the traditional platform shuffle to ensure that everyone can get off and get on without anyone being shunted off the platform opposite and pushed onto the track.

As usual with the Subway, and unlike anywhere else in Glasgow, people rarely speak to one another in the damp, underlit tunnels. If they do converse, it's in the hushed tones usually reserved for a church or cinema. Who knows, maybe we all worry that the echoing tunnels will amplify our voices and give away our best gossip to all and sundry.
