HIDDEN away in the heart of what was once old Cowcaddens is a bowling green with a difference.

Built above a car park, and surrounded on most side by blocks flats, the Dundasvale green provided a small oasis of calm.

In some respects, with the bowling green, a residents' hall and landscaped communal areas, the scheme's developers were trying to recreate the kind of community which was swept away when the old tenements came down to make way for the M8.

The bowling green is certainly a surprise if you pass on the top deck of a bus and spy bowlers playing almost at your own eye-level.

Back in the 1980s, local resident Mary Thomson decided to drag her vacuum cleaner out to make sure the artificial surface was smooth, flat and fuzz free for bowling club president Agnes Caldicott to play.
