THE 'Five Ways' at St George's Cross was once one of the busiest tram junctions in Glasgow.
Look up and you see the 'knitting', the tangle of overhead wires which supplied the 'caurs' with their electrical power. Look closer and you'll also notice that they provided the perfect perch for the local speugs.
This picture, taken in February 1956, also features, far right, the corner of the old Empress Theatre, which caught fire in November of that year.
Opened in 1913, it could seat 2200 patrons, and each seat had the facility to store umbrellas, men's and ladies' hats, and a built in ashtray and vanity mirror.
In May 1964, Jimmy Logan bought the theatre and renamed it the New Metropole. It was later demolished and flats built on the site.
