THIS week's long overdue reopening of the Kelvingrove Bandstand is something the whole city should celebrate.

Built in 1924, this picture of the amphitheatre must have been taken not long after it opened and gives an amazing view of Kelvingrove Park and Kelvin Way. Walking past the tree-shrouded site today, it's hard to imagine that the mighty plane and beech trees were once wee saplings.

The £2.1 million revamp of the bandstand means that current and future generations will be able to experience the same al fresco music and drama that our grandparents once enjoyed.

Now that they've managed to restore this jewel of the West End, perhaps it's time one of the city's high heid yins turned their attention to the resurrection of the Queen's Park bandstand.
