WITH the World Cup now underway in Brazil, today we cover our eyes and cower in shame as we recall Scotland's doomed cup campaign at the 1978 tournament in Argentina.

Buoyed by qualification, and with a potent team at our disposal, manager Ally MacLeod led the Tartan Army to believe that the cup was as good as ours.

The SFA, more fool them, bought into the hype and organised a spectacular Hampden send-off for the team, complete with an open-top bus.

Sadly, after a shock defeat against Peru, a dismal draw with Iran and a too-little-too-late victory against eventual finalists, Holland, Scotland were heading home.

Needless to say, there wasn't much of a crowd to greet them as they touched down back Glasgow.
