GLASGOW'S Police frogmen were out on patrol in the West End in 1960.

Done up like creatures from the Black Lagoon, they were probing the murky depths of the River Kelvin to try to recover a knife which was thrown away following a street assault.

Sadly, despite their best efforts, their search turned up nothing.

The highlight of the day came as one wee girl, watching the divers from the Great Western Road bridge, lost her beret over the end. Thankfully, one of the diver swam over to rescue said bunnet before it washed away and climbed out on to the bank to return it to the child.

Today, Police Scotland maintains two specialised Marine and Underwater Units, with one based in Greenock and the other in Aberdeen.
