WITH the death last week of White Heather Club singer Peter Mallan, today we step back to the days of kitsch, tartan television.
The show, hosted by Robert Wilson and then Andy Stewart, ran from 1958 to 1968 and was recorded weekly at the BBC's Queen Margaret Drive studios. Mind you, it was a ceilidh like no other, with no snogging, whisky drinking or stand-up fights. If you wanted any of that sort of fun, you went to Highlanders Institute in Berkeley Street, where Peter used to sometimes perform his hit song, These Are My Mountains.
Peter later taught music at Holyrood Secondary.
Chief among the White Heather Club's attractions were its dancers, led by Dixie Ingram (that's him sitting on the right in the second back row).
