THESE Paisley mill girls were making tracks for Margate for their summer holiday in 1957.

The Paisley Fair, as distinct from the Glasgow one, saw the town's thread-making machines fall quiet for a fortnight.

The girls, Marion McFadden, Chrissie Neilson, Nanette Greig, Margaret Swales, and Margaret Burns, were racing from Paisley St James Station to catch the London train from Glasgow Central.

Margate, a popular holiday spot with London's East Enders, might seem like a long way to go, but it's location, in Kent - the Garden of England, probably promised better weather than any of the traditional Clyde coast resorts.
