IT WAS all hands on deck in 1953 as workers raced to complete the Wills cigarette factory on Dennistoun's Alexandra Parade.

Perhaps the last monument to be associated with Glasgow's tobacco trading roots, the factory produced a range of WH Wills brands, including Golden Virginia rolling tobacco and various Embassy cigarettes.

In 1964, a cigar factory was opened on the same site.

The factory had smoky neighbours too, with the John Players factory on the other side of Hanson Street, and Gallachers on the other side of the Parade.

Cigarette production stopped at the site in 1982, with the factory later split into business units.

Weirdly, many of the interior scenes from Trainspotting were shot on soundstages built inside the factory.
