THE Old Toll House was built around 1750, though some records date it to 1800.
But whenever it was fashioned, by 1954, it was at this roundabout where all the main roads at Pollokshaws meet up.
The building was created as tolls were being introduced as a way to help with road-building, with the traffic that passed on the road between Glasgow and Ayrshire, being mostly farm produce, cattle and coaches.
The cash was taken at the window by the tollkeeper, who found a way to increase his own income by getting a licence as a hostel.
Business thrived, especially on the days of the annual Pollokshaws Race, held during Pollokshaws Fair.
The event took place on the last Friday of May until 1837 when it was changed to coincide with Glasgow’s Fair and the race was run along a route of Barrhead Road, now Cowglen Road, from Green Knowe to near Kennishead.
But not everyone approved. An Eastwood minister in the late 1830s or early 1840s said it was an excuse for a gathering of  “idle people” and promotin “the sale of whisky”.
