WHERE IS IT?

YOU can find Whitelee Windfarm by heading towards Kilmarnock on the M77 from Glasgow. Leave at Junction 6 and then follow the brown signposts for Whitelee Windfarm Visitor Centre. If you are driving from Ayrshire then you should head towards Glasgow on the A77 and leave at the Fenwick/Stewarton exit, and follow the signs for the Windfarm.

Car parking facilities are located at the visitor centre.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

With 215 turbines and over 130kms of tracks to explore, there is plenty to do. The windfarm welcomes walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and dog walkers to the site.

There is something for everyone whether you are looking for a long walk or a short stroll.

Managed by the Glasgow Science Centre, Whitelee offers impartial insight into the world of renewable energy, so if you want to learn more about harnassing the power of nature to generate greener power, Whitehill is the place to go.

The Loch Route is a whopping 8 miles, which takes around 2.5 hours to complete.

This walk is suitable for walkers, cyclists, and even horse riders. You can pick up a map at the visitors centre.

There are also shorter routes which are ideal for families.

The walk to the Blackwood Hill Viewpoint allows you to enjoy stunning views, including Ben Lomond, Ailsa Craig and Arran.

There are benches to rest on along the way, and a there is a telescope on top of the hill to view the scenery. This walk takes about an hour to complete.

Make sure that you bring warm, waterproof clothing with you if you are going on a walk. You should also bring some snacks with you as well as water to keep yourself hydrated.

There are dedicated mountain bike trails at the windfarm which are suitable for every level of cyclist. If you choose to bring your bike, you can store your bike and have a shower after your cycle.

Whitelee has been carefully planned and designed so that it works in harmony with the environment.

It is one of the largest habitats in the UK. Across the windfarm there are three different types of turbine.

Whitelee Windfarm gives you the chance to partake in hands on interactive activites for both children and adults and investigate how a windfarm is built. The learning hub hosts an assortment of activities and workshops for members of the public and school groups.

One of the main attractions is seeing the process that goes into how a wind turbine is built. The windfarm hosts an array of activities from after school clubs, school trips, birthday parties and guided tours for you to explore the whole windfarm. Explore how they use fossil fuels in renewing energy and see this renewable energy used to create clean green energy which in turn makes cleaner electricity.

There is also an amazing variety of wildlife at Whitelee, including plants and birds. Whitelee is made up of different habitats that provide homes to a wide range of species of plants and animals. This is perfect if you are interested in nature or photography.

95 species of birds have been recorded, including a number of rare and endangered species.

ANYWHERE TO EAT?

There is a cafe which you can visit that serves a selection of both hot and cold food from local suppliers. Teas, coffees, and children’s meals are also available in the cafe. It is open from 10am to 4.30pm every day. The cafe also provides stunning views of the windfarm through large glass windows and an external deck.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Whitelee Windfarm will host an assortment of children’s activities this weekend, create animal masks, build your own land yacht, create wall climbing bugs and learn how seeds grow.

It is not part of a designated bus route. The nearest village in Eaglesham, but if you are travelling by bus you will need a taxi to get to the visitor centre.

The nearest train station is Hairmyres in East Kilbride. Again, you would need a taxi to get from the train station to the windfarm.
