This autumn, as far as colour is concerned, it’s a case of scarlet, crimson and ketchup as one hue stands out more than any other: red.

Back in the spring, when the big design studios showed off their autumn and winter collections, red certainly was the colour of choice, from Dior to Fendi, Marni to Ferragamo.

We mere mortals can’t afford couture, of course, but what happens on the catwalk eventually makes its way to the high street, and you’ve probably already noticed that many shop windows are already full of the colour.

This is good news for most. Whether you’re blonde or brunette, young or old, red is the most versatile colour of the rainbow and can flatter any body shape.

Depending on the design, texture and shade, red works well for all occasions.

It can be a bold and elegant choice for formal events or can add a relaxed splash of colour to your weekend wardrobe. It can play retro cool against pale skins, or give a warming glow to darker skins. Try out different shades of red and see what suits you best – remember, what looks great on the hanger might not work in real life.

Wearing a bold red with one other colour makes a sophisticated style statement. White and black are the classic matches for red, but don’t be afraid to experiment with other colours such as pink, blue and purple. And a red shirt or blouse with jeans usually always works well, either for day or dressed up for evening.

You can even add a third colour – black, white and red is a classic pop art combination, while greys and nudes work well when you’re looking to let one red statement item do the talking.

So whether you’re going for the siren look with a dress, going vintage with a skirt, or maybe just adding in a splash of colour with accessories, don’t be afraid to release your inner Chris de Burgh – a lady in red always turn heads.
