THIS is a sad sight for music fans ... the day Glasgow’s most famous music venue was demolished.
It happened in September 1987 after the disused Apollo theatre was found to be crumbling. Building inspectors declared the Renfield Street venue unsafe and two huge bulldozers moved in and began the demolition job.
The giant building, which was previously Green’s Playhouse, had closed two years earlier, with the
Apollo having played host to
a number of stars through the years.
Its first act was country singer Johnny Cash in 1973 and other famous names who appeared on stage included the Rolling Stones, Queen, Simple Minds, Rod Stewart, Billy Connolly, the Osmonds and even Abba, who played their last ever UK gig there in 1979.
The 14-screen Cineworld now sits on the site.
These smiling assistants were ready to help customers looking for fresh bread, rolls and eggs from the well-stocked shelves at the Cowlairs Co-operative Society in Millarbank Street, Springburn, back in 1932
