DURING the Second World War they were over here and American military personnel returned to the UK in their thousands in September 1957 when nearly 80 Nato warships took party in a military exercise known as Strike Back.
Sailors from the US fleet enjoyed shore leave before the operation began and they descended on Glasgow and towns such as Largs, Dunoon, Oban and Rothesay.
These two enjoyed the autumn sunshine in George Square and took the opportunity to photograph
this local man feeding the pigeons.
Their shipmates hit the shops in the hunt for souvenirs, with stores selling tartan and cashmere proving very popular.
The participating ships, from countries such as Canada, France, Netherlands, and Germany, as well as the UK and US, were berthed off Greenock and  Largs and were an attraction for Scots.
Several hundred children from Ayrshire schools travelled by train to Largs and were then taken on cruise boats to view the fleet.
Within 24 hours it was a case of anchors aweigh for the sailors. Wonder if the duo above still have their George Square photograph.
