A Glasgow chip shop is offering its customers deep fried Twinkies - just in time for Thanksgiving.

Twinkies, America's iconic golden sponge treat, touched down in the UK for the very first time earlier this year – and Philadelphia chip shop  in the West End has unveiled its deep fried version of the cream-filled snack today.

Glasgow Times:

Brian McLellan, Head Fryer and Manager of Philadelphia, which turns 50 years old next year, said: "Most people are familiar with the deep fried Mars Bars, a Scottish delicacy, but actually it can be quite cloying and heavy due to the high chocolate and caramel content.

"The Twinkie is the perfect sweet treat for frying, as it's light, fluffy and the cream is concealed inside, so doesn’t get too hot. The result is absolutely delicious, but the challenge is to stop at just one!"

Glasgow Times:

The dish, which will go on sale today priced at £1.50, is created by dipping the Twinkie in batter and then frying it at 330°F (165°C).

Vishal Madhu, Director of Innovative Bites, added: "Consumers insatiable appetite for all things American is growing, so it made perfect sense to bring Twinkies to the UK  – not just in it’s original guise, but in new flavours too."

Glasgow Times:

Until recently Twinkies were not available in the UK, but thanks to Innovative Bites – one of the UK's leading distributors of American goods – the snack has now hit British grocery stores. Twinkies are currently stocked in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, WHSmith’s and other quality retailers across the UK.

Available in original - and now banana and chocolate  - the sweet treat comes in packs of two, priced from £1.99, and multi-packs of ten priced from £7.50.
