HAMPDEN, 1920. Sports fans flocked to the stadium in Glasgow’s Mount Florida for all sorts of events at the start of the Roaring 20s, when the “Hampden Roar” consisted of up to 145,000 voices.
It was the biggest stadium in the world when it was inaugurated by a Queens Park football match against Celtic, which the hosts won, and grew further between 1927 and 1937, when its capacity peaked at 150,000.
Sports other than football have been contested there – Eric Liddell won the 110, 220 and 440 yard races there in 1924; rugby union has graced its turf, the first time in 1906; and tennis star Suzanne Lenglen played an exhibition match there in 1927. During the Second World War, US forces used it for softball, baseball and American football, and Mike Tyson floored Lou Savarese in 12 seconds, ended their boxing bout there in 2000 in just 38 seconds.
Nowadays, the stadium holds just more than 50,000 spectators, though when needed, each makes enough noise for three to ensure the Hampden roar is never diminished.
