NANCY KENNEDY, of Rutherglen, had been a tram conductress for almost six years when this picture was taken in 1956.

And she could find no fault with being a “clippie”.

Nancy worked from Dalmarnock depot on shifts which could begin at 4am or 12.40am.

But she kept smiling, kept her sense of humour and carried no chip on her shoulder about the big, bad travelling public.

“Everyone can’t be nice and everyone isn’t nasty, so it all works out,” she said, as she settled her beret more firmly on her head in preparation for another day of “Fares, please.”

Nancy was following in the footsteps of other women to be taken on as conductresses in Glasgow but only since 1947 when there had been a shortage of staff.

Women had worked on the trams during the wars but had been expected to give up their jobs when the men came home from the front.
