I've been thinking for a while that my plain, boring brown hair needed a change.

Having spent my teenage years with an ever-changing barnet- purple, platinum blonde, black, red, brown - I've been giving my locks a break from colouring ever since.

But, having mulled over the decision for a few months, I decided to change things up and picked West End salon number659 to do it for me.

It boasts tailor-made colour, super sharp cutting skills and styles fit for any occasion, plus the minimalist, sleek decor and relaxed atmosphere makes the whole place a winner.

Glasgow Times:

Kirsty Teal, the salon's colouring specialist, spends all her working days dying hair - black to blonde, blue to brown, you name it, she 's probably done it.

For this reason, she likes to make sure she knows her clients and knows exactly what they are looking for.

She spent ages talking over the different options I had thought of.

She even showed me pictures of different colours she had done on real people, so I could see how the actual hair looked as opposed to a colour swatch in a book.

After deliberations,I decided on a dark red shade, a combination of a number of different copper and mahogany shades, - not brassy so my hair kept its shine.

Two weeks later I was back in the salon and ready to begin.

The place itself is bare and minimal, but welcoming.

Everyone from pensioners to teenagers visited during the two and a half hours I spent there, with many so excited about their new dos they started taking pictures immediately.

Glasgow Times:
After around an hour, dye had been slathered all over my hair and rinsed off. I relaxed over a coffee and a magazine during the wait, perfectly content.

When I looked in the mirror at first I was stunned at how different my hair looked but after a cut and blow dry the deep red colour really came out, and as promised, my hair was still shiny.

The L'oreal dye, Kirsty explained, is used for all the salon's colour as it doesn't damage the hair as much as many others on the market, and it didn't contain lots of harsh chemicals which usually come hand-in-hand with colouring.

I'll admit, I was sceptical at first but after two weeks my hair isn't dry and my colour is still as vibrant as ever.

Stylist Reece created a braided up-do impressively quickly, first tying all my hair back in small elastics, plaiting it together and gently teasing out different sections to create a messy, volumised braid.

Glasgow Times:

The finished look was incredible and, although a bit over the top for a Saturday morning trip to the supermarket, it was a nice change than my usual hair down look.

I left feeling relaxed and satisfied.

Verdict - five stars

Colour and cut - £100
Braiding - £25
