IT had been a long hard week in the old gumshoe world, things weren’t going my way and I had a few cases to crack.

“Let’s go see a movie,” I begged toots desperate to find something to take my mind off work.

“Yes honey, let’s do that. I am desperate to see La La Land,” she beamed excitedly.

“Well, what’s that about,” I dared to ask.

She started: “That handsome fella Ryan something is in it. And it’s so romantic, and there is dancing, and…”

I interrupted: “OK whatever you want hon, I get to choose where we eat though. There is this burger joint I have been dying to try.”

Me and blondie then quickly jumped in the Buick – after her ladyship preened herself of course – and headed to Silverburn.

We arrived at Handmade Burger Company and a very helpful gentleman showed us to our table, explained there might be a wait and asked if we had been before.

“He’s a helpful fella,” I said to Toots.

“I like that,” she said not taking her eyes off the menu, and running her scarlet nails up and down it.

Feeling a bit sweet I ordered drinks. I opted for an Oreo milkshake and two cokes.

“You can never resist those milkshakes hon,” Toots chipped in.

I wasn’t sure if that was a hint to stop drinking them but I ignored her musings.

The menu was packed with – you guessed it – burgers.

Beef, chicken, veggie – it’s a burger fans dream.

I asked the waitress the most important question for me, “are they well done?”

She replied that all the burgers are well done – a huge relief, as I can’t stand seeing blood in my beef.

I went for the Handmade Burger Company’s cheese and bacon burger. It was packed with mature cheddar, smoked bacon, smokey barbecue relish, mayo lettuce, tomato and red onion.

Toots choose the dirty burger cheese and bacon. That came with a beef patty, American cheese, maple coated bacon, lettuce, onion ketchup, Handmade Burger Company sauce and was served on a buttermilk bun with jalapeno slaw and a gherkin.

My burger was mediocre, I have to admit Five Guys have set the standard for me. I pretty much compare every burger to Five Guys, and this is not one I will be jumping to try again.

Toots loved her burger though, barely coming up for air from each bite.

We also opted for a handful of sides as there was so much choice we wanted to try a bit of everything.

Our sides included onion rings, sweet potato fries, rosemary salt chips and halloumi bites with a mango dip.

I devoured the rosemary salt chips. They were tasty, thick and left me wanting more.

The halloumi bites, however, were just plain wrong. The cheese and dip did not mesh well and I just didn’t enjoy them.

Her ladyship might have loved the burger but she complained her onion rings were soggy in the middle while the sweet potato fries were dry.

I took a bite of each and I had to agree – she wasn’t being a diva for once.

Given its competition in Silverburn, I can’t see myself or blondie rushing back to the Handmade Burger Company.

It’s just not value for money for what you get and the food wasn’t something to shout home about.

We made it up to the cinema to see there was no more showings of La La Land.

“How about The Founder?” I suggested.

“What’s that about?” Toots looked baffled.

I had a quick look at the description, and burst into laughter, “Burgers and the guy who founded McDonald's. I think we have had enough of those.”
