Who are you?

John Connor of Dooey Limited

What does your business do?

Dooey is the world’s first messaging app created to simplify the lives of mobile users by bringing their work and social communications to one place. Dooey keeps communication simple by consolidating messaging from its current fragmented state into a single coherent platform. The app is divided into two dedicated channels; a place where users can seamlessly switch between ‘social’ and ‘business’ modes with one toggle so that they can more easily focus on different projects. One of our additional key features is the ability to branch your conversation into a new thread to keep on topic and organised. This works great in both business and social, either organising a project or a weekend away.

Where are you based?

Glasgow

How did you get started?

I began working with business partners on the concept before applying for and winning Smart:Scotland funding to build our initial release.

What is your background?

My background was in shipbuilding on the Clyde. I’ve always had a passion for engineering and technical innovation and decided it was time to act upon it.

What is your top business tip?

Definitely look at what services such as Business Gateway and Scottish Enterprise amongst many others can do to help you. It’s highly unlikely you can do everything yourself and leaning on these support mechanisms frees you up to concentrate on your goals.

How long has your business been running?

Dooey became available in May.

Has anyone helped you get started and how?

Business Gateway Glasgow has provided tremendous support to us. As well as one-to-one advice from my adviser, I received assistance and guidance in what would be a successful Smart Scotland grant application. I have also found it really useful to keep in touch with people I have met through networking who are usually more than willing to provide some expert advice.

What was your first deal?

The funding we received was crucial as it allowed us to develop our initial iteration of Dooey for iOS.

What would you do differently?

I’d have engaged with Business Gateway a lot sooner to tap into the advice and facilities they offer.

Who was your mentor and is your inspiration?

I’m always inspired by success stories and Scotland inspires me with its rich history of innovation; from inventing the television to the pneumatic tyre. If you looked at what Scotland has done for the world it’s fundamentally influenced almost every part of modern civilization so I find that inspiring.

Where do you plan your business to be in five years’ time?

It’s our ambition to build Dooey into the next big Scottish success story such as Skyscanner or Fanduel. We know what is possible with the amazing talent in our country.
