A NEW clothing retailer is moving into Glasgow's iconic Sauchiehall Street after the departure of several big stores.

Bonmarché is due to take up a unit on the city centre street which has lost several retailers over the last few years.

The clothing retailer, who is owned by the Peacock Group, was founded in 1982 and has over 300 stores around the UK.

Bonmarché has not yet revealed the date the store will open or how many jobs will be created.

The opening comes after the Evening Times reported last month on the closure of popular Irish retailer Dunnes.

Around 18 staff at Dunnes Stores lost their jobs after they were told that the Glasgow branch would close for good on Saturday, October 14.

The closure meant another empty unit on Sauchiehall Street with Greaves Sports also closing at the start of the year.

Managing director Sandy Greaves blamed the rise of out of town shopping centres for the closure of the branch.

The sports retailer, which first opened up in Glasgow in 1930, made the announcement following the departure of High Street chain BHS from Sauchiehall Street the previous year.

The Evening Times has contacted Bonmarché for comment.
