PLANS to turn a vacant retail unit into a Asian street style eatery in Glasgow's West End have been rejected by Glasgow City Council.

KKK Korea (Glasgow) Ltd wanted to take over an empty unit on Byres Road. The unit was previously occupied by a leading mobile telephone operator and a women's boutique.

The firm wanted to change the use of the unit so that they can bring their Dai Pai chain into the plush shopping street - but city planners rejected their application this week.

The proposal was rejected because planners felt it would result in the unacceptable loss of a class one retail unit in Byres Road which would be to the detriment of the area's character and function as a town centre.

They were also concerned about the proximity of the eatery to residential flats as they felt the cooking fumes and odours from the operation would have an adverse effect.

Another concern was a lack of on-site waste and recycling storage. Planners felt this would result in the storage of waste and recycling on the footway.

The firm's Edinburgh branch offers Asian favourites such as gyozas, rice and noodles, and sushi.

The eatery had planned to open from 11am to 10pm seven days a week, and the business currently operates in Dundee and Edinburgh.
