WHEN Commonwealth Games Federation president Prince Imran of Malaysia told the world, "Glasgow, you delivered the best Games ever," he was echoing praise which had built throughout the Games.

But it isn't the whole story.

Glasgow is now among the top 10 sporting cities in the world, and the venues which helped the city win such acclaim are used day in day out by the people of Glasgow.

In recent years the city has spent around £200 million on world class facilities and all were open and in use by the public more than one year in advance of the Games.

Just 15 days after the closing ceremony, facilities such as the £113million Emirates Arena, the £14million Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Scotstoun Sports Campus and Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls were reopened and back in use by the public.

These venues are already helping inspire the next generation of sports stars with involvement at a grassroots level increasing dramatically in recent years.

Participation in sport is now at a record high, with 6.6million attendances at Glasgow's venues over the last year alone and a 50% increase in membership of the Glasgow Club health and fitness network since 2009.

Attendance at sports facilities in Glasgow is also up 50% since 2009 while membership of sports clubs is up 267% in the same period.

Councillor Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life, said: "The legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is being felt across the our city with an increase in participation at our sports facilities and clubs.

"These world-class facilities belong to the people of Glasgow - and now local people are taking full advantage and making use of the same tracks, pools and arenas where they watched the world's finest athletes compete this summer.

"The legacy of the Games won't just be a passing golden glow in people's memory, but instead a real and lasting improvement to the health and wellbeing of our city."

No matter where you live in Glasgow, there are sports facilities near you.

There are 22 Glasgow Club gyms, 11 pools and dozens of sports pitches around the city and there are more than 1000 fitness classes a week.
