Watersports for disabled

GLASGOW Sport is making waves after launching the city's first watersports club for people with a disability.

The watersports introductory day at Glasgow's Pinkston Centre was a taster event for more than 20 pupils from Abercorn and Ashcraig ASN schools and Hollybrook Academy.

A group of adults supported by the charity Sense Scotland also pulled on wetsuits at the facility which opened in April.

The groups tried out kayaking on Pinkston's flat water basin, and rafting on the centre's artificial white water course.

The purpose of the event was to highlight that watersports are available to all and open up a fresh, new sporting opportunity to those with physical, learning and sensory disabilities.

Gordon McCormack, senior disabilities sports development officer with Glasgow Life, helped organise the event with the support of Glasgow and Blairvaddach outdoor resource centres. Their staff volunteered at the activity day and provided extra equipment including wetsuits, kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids.

Tips to help you keep active from the Glasgow Club

  • Be realistic about what you want to achieve
  • Build up the intensity and frequency of your activity sessions gradually
  • Find an activity which you enjoy
  • Exercise with a friend
  • Use the stairs as often as possible
  • Make active choices as part of your daily routine
  • Get out at Lunchtime! Why not go to the shops or park at lunchtime instead of staying at work? The walk will also make you feel more awake in the afternoon
