Who are you?

I'm Nicola Mason and I run Hey Sailor with my husband John Sutherland.

What does your business do?

Hey Sailor is and online jewellery and accessories store specialising in vintage, designer and homeware.

Where are you based?

We are an online only store but we currently run everything from our home office in Glasgow and our mobile devices when we are on the go. This helps us keep our overheads low and in turn our products well priced.

How did you get started?

We started from our flat, we turned our spare bedroom into our office and the rest is history.

What is your background

This is always a difficult question for us...it's complicated.

I originally studied music then went on to study graphic design and later silversmithing. I still do all 3, well when I have time.

John studied computer science then sound engineering and is an all round numbers genius.

We we both have a lot of retail experience too.

What is your top tip?

If you have an idea or something that you would like to turn into an idea just go ahead and do it. It's a scary thought but it's totally worth the effort.

How long has your business been running?

We launched just under two years ago.

Has anyone helped you get started and how?

We did pretty much everything ourselves, and reeled in some favours from our nearest and dearest.

Everything from the website design to carefully curating and photographing each and every piece on the site.

We were in touch with Business Gateway and they gave us some great advice about creating our business plan as well as registering our business.

Where do you plan your business to be in five years time?

We just want to get bigger and bigger, and hopefully have our own office and stockroom (that isn't attached to our home). We wanna keep doing what we are doing but on a much bigger scale.
