Who are you?

A BSc (Hons) Microbiology graduate - Mariam Mahmud, single mother of my 4-year- old son and owner of Shadeen27.

What does your business do?

With additional studies in Botanical Science Cosmetics, I have designed and developed a range of natural, organic and multifunctional skincare products.

Where are you based?

We are based in Glasgow, I live here and it's a great place to base a start-up company.

We are an online-only company just now.

How did you get started?

Following my in depth studies and own research, I started experimenting with different ingredients at home and my company grew from there.

What is your background

I graduated 2009 with BSc (Hons) Microbiology from Glasgow Caledonian University; I also completed a Diploma Certificate in Botanical Science Cosmetics in 2013.

During my studies, I worked as a social care support worker for six years.

In 2011 to 2012, I did volunteer work at the Refugee Council as a case advisor and administrative assistant, and all of this helped me to build up my skills for starting my own business.

What is your top tip?

There are so many challenges when you want to start up a business.

All I can say is believe in yourself and chase your dream.

There is a quote I love from Anne Gatshore of Royal Bank of Scotland " NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE "

Has anyone helped you get started and how?

Without The Prince's Trust and the BT Young Entrepreneur scheme, I wouldn't have been able to start my business.

The grant helped me buy the ingredients I needed, while my business mentor helped me discuss strategy and what to do when problems like supplier delay come up.

They've also given me the opportunity to network with other young businesses which I think will be really helpful.

Radiant & Brighter have also been very supportive and still are supporting me in various areas for instance business pitching, networking and many more.

I found this very helpful because it helped to boost my confidence and kept me motivated while working on my business idea. Thanks to Pheona & Michael Matovu.

Jobs and Business gave me advice on various issues including writing a business plan, applying for funds at The Prince's Trust and Business Gateway. Many thanks to my Business Advisor Anita Yu from Jobs & Business.

Royal Bank of Scotland have given me additional mentorship .Thank you to Darren Pier & Anne Gatshore

What was your biggest mistake/or what would you do differently?

With everything I have experienced as an upcoming business owner I personally can`t term anything as a mistake - it is a learning journey and there is always room for improvement despite the subject.

Who was/is your mentor/or inspiration?

Jean Hamilton from The Prince's Trust

Pheona Matovu from Radiant & Brighter

Where do you plan your business to be in five years time?

To see my business grow, have my own laboratory and employ other people to help me grow and develop my products.
