Hotel had Legionnaires' disease outbreak

We ARE soon to stay in a hotel that we hear once had an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease.

What is it?

Legionnaires' disease is a potentially fatal lung infection (pneumonia) that is caused by the bacteria legionella and is contracted by breathing in small droplets of contaminated water.

Legionella bacteria can be found in sources of water, such as rivers and lakes and can sometimes find their way into artificial water supply systems, such as air conditioning systems, hot and cold water services, and cooling towers. Given the right conditions, legionella bacteria can rapidly spread, contaminating these water systems.

Buildings such as hotels, hospitals and office blocks are more vulnerable.

As part of the public health response to the previous outbreak at the hotel, there will have been remedial work done to the supply but also comprehensive follow up testing to ensure the bug has been eradicated.

So enjoy your stay and do not worry.
