Who are you?
I’m Laura Birrell, 46 and mum to three-year-old Warren (he came a little late in life!)  I grew up in Oban and have been living in Glasgow for the last 17 years.

What does your business do?
Sticky Heelz is a brand I have created to bring to the market a product which addresses the issue of loose-fitting shoes.

Shoes are commonly identified as the issue but it’s usually the feet that are the issue. Most of my customers have either slightly different sized feet, narrow feet, small feet or half shoe size feet which means certain styles of shoes don’t fit.

Where are you based?
I am based in the Entrepreneurial Spark Powered by Royal Bank of Scotland Glasgow Hatchery.

How did you get started?
I came up with the concept for the product in 2013 while on maternity leave, but soon realised it was going to be difficult striking a balance between work and childcare so took the opportunity to work for myself and achieve me dream of building a brand.

What is your background?
I have always had an entrepreneurial streak and loved being involved in the day to day running at my previous job as a director for a building research organisation. I also studied for my CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification.

What is your top tip?
Know your numbers and understand the financial implications of the decisions that you make. I come across entrepreneurs who are really good at what they do but struggle to understand why they don’t make money or how to maximise income.

How long has your business been running?
I started trading online in November 2015. It was a great success and we have recently been listed on Boots online and are meeting with other major retailers with plans to bring another three products on board.

What was your biggest mistake?
I entered this journey completely naïve to how different the retail and consultancy industries are. I have been on a massive learning curve since November 2015, and would advise anybody to research the industry, even if you think you know it.

Speak to mentors and advisors who will provide constructive feedback on your product and ensure that you are investing your money at the right time.

Who is your inspiration?
My inspiration from day one has been Sara Blakely from Spanx. Her story about building her brand has really inspired me.
