If you want a new look that's quick to achieve and doesn't cost the earth, changing your hair can provide this - especially when it doesn't need to involve a full re-style.

Blow-drying bars, which provide exactly this type of service, have sprung up across Glasgow in the last few years, but one salon is taking the idea even further - by concentrating on fringes.

The Bang Bar, run out of the BLOW salon in trendy Finnieston, has a similar format to a blow-dry bar. Clients are offered a menu of six different fringe options, and in consultation with a stylist they choose the one they want. The stylist then gets to work while the client relaxes with a cocktail or a cuppa.

According to Fallon Carberry, BLOW's 30-year-old owner, the service is proving hugely popular since launching last month.

"There are already blow bars in Glasgow and in London there are braid bars, so I wanted to come up with a something different," she explains. "Fringes are always popular - micro-fringes are really big at the moment - and they can totally change the look of a hairstyle.

"I don't think stylists and salons put enough focus on the fringe. They often don't take the time to really think about what sort of fringe suits which face shape, and then they don't put enough time and effort into cutting the fringe with total precision.

"That's what we do here. And since it only costs £8, people can get a whole new look at a very reasonable price."

She adds: "People like to change their look without having to change the whole style. We get people coming in who work their way through the whole menu."

Having a fringe cut in can be quite daunting, says Fallon, which is why the Bang Bar has another option to offer clients - clip-on fringes.

This new product, made from human hair, costs £20 and is available in 10 different colours. It can also be dyed to blend in exactly with the client's own hair.

"Getting a fringe can be a bit scary for people," says Fallon, who opened the business in Argyle Street nine months ago. "Using a clip-on fringe is the ideal way to see whether you like having a fringe and want to take the next step.

"It's also a great way to totally change your look for a festival, a holiday or a wedding.

"We think this is going to be huge over the summer - we're all wearing them in the salon already."

Fallon says it has been a whirlwind since opening, with the team - currently 10 stylists - and opening hours constantly expanding to keep up with demand.

But the hard work is paying off, she adds. The salon was recently nominated for three Herald Look awards [link to: http://herald-events.com/heraldlook/event-2/] - Hair Salon of the Year (Small), Best Use of Social Media and Best Start-up.

"We were really shocked to be nominated because we've only been open for nine months," says Fallon. "But I think it says a lot about the impact we've made in such a short time. We're really proud."

The Herald Look awards will be presented at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow on 17 May.
