The summer holiday season is fast approaching and whether you're going to Marbella or Millport, getting it right on the beach is all part of the fun.

Swimwear can be a stressful thought for some, however. After all, not everyone is happy to bare their body on the beach.

But thankfully this year's array of styles and colours means there really is something for everyone, regardless of age, body shape or budget.

Much of the swimwear hitting the high street this year focuses on two key looks - loud patterned prints and classic. Tribal, Aztec and photo prints are huge this season, from bright and bold to more subtle black and white.

Also big this year is the super-glamorous classic pin-up look, which encompasses 1950s-style full-body swimsuits and high-waisted bikini bottoms.

So, what to choose? We headed to Buchanan Galleries to get the lowdown from an expert and see what some of the big stores have to offer.

According to Boux Avenue's buying director Debby Duckett, good swimwear is all about support.

"The fit of your swimwear is as important as your lingerie - it needs to be right in order for it to look good and provide you with just the right amount of support," she said. "Cup-sized swimwear will always give you the best fit, and if you can, get measured so you are confident that you are wearing the correct size.

"There are so many fabulous trends this summer including photographic florals and frills for that girlie look, bright neons which will always look fantastic with a tan, and our favourite at Boux Avenue - the high waist trend. This style is great if you like the vintage look, or just prefer to keep your waist covered."

The store has a range of sizes from 28 to 38, in A to G cups and offers free fittings.

Among their key pieces this season are the bright orange Biarritz frill bikini top (£26) and bottoms (£14) and the Hollywood gingham bikini top £28) and high-waisted frill briefs (£20).

At River Island meanwhile, it's all about tropical prints. The more daring among us may be willing to try the brand's white floral print swimsuit, which has trendy cut-out styling at the sides and back. Among the other eye-catching swimwear on offer is the pink baroque print jersey kaftan (£30), which is a great option for keeping cool - and covering up if you're feeling a bit more modest.

Warehouse also has a gorgeous range of kaftans, including a white cotton tassel version (£50) and a tie-front sheer option printed in the trendy graphic tile motif (£25). Elsewhere, their tropical palm print bikini, in lemon, blue and pink (£34) is the perfect mash-up of this season's two key trends, with its high-waist styling.

Spanish brand Mango should certainly know a thing or two about swimwear. Among their stand-out items this season is the classic navy and white-striped bikini (top £19.99, briefs £14.99). The store also has a full range of bandeaus and mismatched bottoms for those who prefer to create their own look.

With so much to choose from, anyone can make a splash this summer.

Buchanan Galleries is open till 7pm except on Thursdays, 8pm, and Sundays 6pm.
