LIGHT, bright summer scents lead with the way with the changing of the seasons.

What goes into making a summer fragrance?

"When developing a new fragrance our perfumer works to captivate the senses and create a unique moment in time," explains Sarah McKeeman of Arran Aromatics.

"We created Citrus Shores to complement vibrant summers with the awakening scent of citrus. Full of zing and vitality, Citrus Shores has zesty top notes of bergamot peel, the sparkle of freshly rasped lemons, blended with the sweetness of fruity cassis around a heart of green leaf."

A long-standing favourite at Arran Aromatics, Citrus Shores Eau de Toilette, from £12.50, has a zesty formulation. While Eydis Eau de Toilette, from £12.50, has extracts of lime, mandarin and bergamot.

For top tips on how to wear fragrance in the summer months, Sarah recommends layering.

"Start with a refreshing shower using Citrus Shores Bath and Shower Gel. Then add a little pamper to your morning routine with the luxurious Citrus Shores scented Shea Butter Cream and finish with the Citrus Shores Eau de Toilette for a scent that stays true all day," she says.

Some summer scents leave you dreaming of lying back on a sun lounger by the pool, others are more invigorating.

DKNY Women Limited Edition, £41, comes in the latter category, a bold fusion of spearmint with sweet orange and grapefruit with lily, carnation and tiare flower developing into layers of patchouli and creamy vanilla.

The distinctive Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, £47, has quickly grown to become a firm favourite. Packed with delicious coconut and juicy mandarin as well as jasmine and amber, for many it is the scent of summer.

Spritz on the Eau Fraiche Skinscent on hot sunny days and top up at night. It is a must-have fragrance, whenever you see the sun.

A fruity floral that can be worn by men as well as women, Tom Ford Fleur de Portofino, £130, is a private blend that is new this year.
