SHINING a light on the latest interiors innovations is a family affair for mother and daughter Laura and Rebecca Pagan.

The faces behind the chain of Pagazzi stores across Scotland say choosing the right lighting for your home has never been so important.

As customers become more trend conscious they are updating lighting as they change their decor at home.

"When I started the company with my first shop in West George Street, Glasgow, in 1980, people used to buy a replacement shade for a base or they would have a five-light fitting in their room and buy replacement shades," remembers Laura.

"It was all very traditional in those days. It has completely changed now and is trend driven."

In this year is the industrial look with fisherman's pendants, diner lights and tripod floor lamps in matte and brass finishes all hugely popular.

And copper is everywhere, accenting the rise and rise of the trend for the warm metal tone in every area of homeware.

The largest independent lighting retailer in the UK, Pagazzi has something for every style and budget. One of the bestsellers is the glittery Mason touch table lamp.

"Our Glasgow customer base love anything that glitters," says Rebecca, who joined the business in 2009 to set up the website and is now in the buying department. "Whereas in Aberdeen they prefer more antique brass and bigger fittings. There is a real difference across the country in the styles customers like."

Rebecca says British customers still lag behind their European counterparts who place more importance on lighting when planning a room. Here we still seem to see it as an afterthought, a final decorative touch to be added to finish the room rather than thinking about task lighting for specific areas.

"Looking ahead, the main thing that will change for lighting in Britain in the next few years is that everything is going to have to become LED," says Laura.

"Right now in Europe about 80% of the lighting bought there is LED, while in the UK it is only 5%. So we are quite behind. It is good for energy saving, to help the environment and to save money.

"It might take a while for us to change as a lot of LED lighting can be really modern and simplistic, without shades; it is much more streamlined. In the UK people still prefer lights with shades.

"LED lighting is still a bit more expensive but you pay out more at the beginning and the light lasts for 25 years and you don't have to change bulbs. So in the long run you save money."

With the addition of Laura's husband Alan to the team in 2002 when they business moved from high street stores to retail parks, it is now officially a family concern.

With more than 3500 different products to choose from, they have certainly have put lighting in the spotlight.
