FOR 40 years he has been the king of British couture, best known for dressing the likes of Sienna Miller, Rihanna, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rosamund Pike and, back in the day, Princess Diana.

But now mere mortals will have the opportunity to wear Bruce Oldfield thanks to his new collection for John Lewis.

Glasgow was one of the stores chosen to launch the new range last week, which features the sort of tailoring and attention to detail that made Oldfield’s name.

Normally a couture piece from Bruce Oldfield would set you back thousands, but this ready-to-wear collection is competitively priced, starting at £59, and comes in sizes 8-18.

And it covers all the bases from smart, tailored blouses and tops to beautiful panelled skirts and dresses, and elegant winter coats that would make anyone stand out from the crowd.

The workwear pieces are on-trend with the current "updated 1980s" look, while the dresses in particular are typical of Oldfield's signature understated glamour.

And, as you would expect from the Yorkshire-born designer, the fabrics used throughout are premium, featuring delicate embroidery, smooth velvets and opulent silks.

Stand-out pieces include the swan dress, which has a structured silk bodice and metallic print detailing, and the striped monochrome silk and velvet skirt. The silk-panelled Little Bruce Dress, meanwhile, is a timeless piece that will enhance any wardrobe for years.

Anna Easdale, personal stylist at John Lewis Glasgow said, “The Bruce by Bruce Oldfield collection is perfect for those Glasgow shoppers looking to update their workwear wardrobe with some smart, monochromatic tailoring.

"With hints of metallic shimmer and warm blush tones, they make a great multifunctional investment buy too, with the upcoming party season in mind."

For every Little Bruce Dress sold, £20 will be donated to Barnardos, where Oldfield is vice president. The designer grew up in the care of the charity as a child.
