A TIME difference of nine hours hasn’t got in the way of two Scottish sisters living on opposite sides of the world coming up with an exciting new interiors website.

From their homes in Glasgow’s West End and Sydney, Australia, Lynn and Helen Gray are the brains – and the impeccable taste – behind Beba Home, a carefully curated selection of well-made, design-conscious pieces to have in your home for many years to come.

For those of us who still think back longingly to the Colonial furniture store that used to be on Woodlands Road, Glasgow, there is much joy in the return of owner Lynn in her new project.

“The ethos with Colonial was really lovely solid wood furniture, uniquely designed that you’re not going to see anywhere else,” says Lynn.

“Because we had the furniture made and imported it direct it didn’t have the designer price tag and built up our own range over the years.

“Business has been changing and everything was switching online. So we have taken the same idea and launched online.

“Initially it is a small range, but that is going to expand. It’s a mixture of a classic style but some of it is quirkier.

“We want classic, timeless design, which a lot of it is, but there is a lot of mid-century and retro pieces around just now and there are some like that. The range will evolve over time but the pieces are something, I think, you would want to live with for years.

“It’s not disposable furniture. If you take the essence of a lot of these styles but keep that simplicity they stand the test of time.”

With a target market of design-conscious 30 and 40-somethings, Bebahome brings something new to the market.

“When I first started Colonial there was pine everywhere and lots of shiny reproduction furniture and not much else. That was what really inspired me to start,” says Lynn.

“Now oak has replaced the old pine and it has just become very boring again. There are bespoke nice pieces but not everyone has the time or the money to go to interior designers or craftsmen and commission pieces.

“There is a market for thoughtfully and beautifully produced solid wood pieces that are not disposable and flat pack. People want something they will look at and love for years to come.”

Both Lynn and Helen have young children and juggle busy family life with running the business – notching up endless hours of facetime online, usually in their pyjamas, she laughs.

“When I set up Colonial, Helen was at university and when she graduated she came into the business. It’s amazing, we just have the same style,” she says.

“Before we started this she was looking for furniture in Australia and I said, ‘I’ve got just the thing, I’ve seen something’. I showed her a picture, and she said, ’That’s the piece I looked at here’. That’s not the first time we’ve done that.

“We just have that sister thing which means we can work really well together.”
