Oops! Something just happened that would be considered a crime against red carpet fashion. Or did it really?

Tina Fey and Reese Witherspoon wore what looked like very similar-looking strapless purple gowns at the 88th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, despite opting for different designers ahead of the glamorous event.

The 39-year-old Legally Blonde actress picked an Oscar de la Renta gown and blinged out with jewellery by Tiffany & Co worth an eye-watering US$1 million.

The star kept her blonde hair sleek and loose and finished her look with fuschia lipstick.

In contrast, Tina wore opted for a chic silhouette with her Versace number that came with ruching at the waistline, and gathered her hair into an up-do.

The 45-year-old 30 Rock actress completed her look with a Bulgari necklace with sapphire jewels.

But of course, on looking in closer detail, the dresses aren’t really that similar.

So maybe this so-called fashion faux pas that started trending online may not be a couture crime after all. Cue sarcasm.

Which begs this question…

But if you remember Anne Hathaway was faced with a similar situation three years ago when she found out Amanda Seyfried was wearing a dress that was believed to look exactly like hers and consequently changed her outfit at the very last minute.

So we now wonder whether Reese and Tina are feeling any slight pangs of regret…
