There are many ways to bring a bit of light to your life – but for Lorraine Forsyth that meant making and selling her own candles.

The 44-year-old mum of two from Motherwell gave up a successful career as a psychologist to pursue her wish to have a more creative life. After learning how to make scented candles, she set up Daisy Blue last year and since then the business has gone from strength to strength, with her products being stocked in more than 20 stores, cafes and galleries.

Ask Lorraine why she thinks her premium candles and diffusers have proved so popular, and she talks of the quality of the materials she uses – and the TLC she puts into each one.

“I make every single candle as though it was for myself,” she smiles. “Nothing leaves the workshop unless it is 100 per cent perfect. The design is elegant and classic and fits into any home, and I only use paragon-free oils, so the scents of my candles are very natural.

“People work hard and money doesn’t come easily. I consider it a huge deal when someone spends their hard-earned cash buying one of my candles. Customer service is the most important things for me - the least I can do it make sure they know that I appreciate it.”

In future, Lorraine would love to expand Daisy Blue into a full homeware range. She’d also love to open a shop. Until then, she’s happy selling online and through suppliers.

And she has no regrets about giving up her previous career. “I love being my own boss and not having to deal with office politics,” laughs Lorraine. “And it’s great to be able to allow the creative side of my personality out after 20 years in an office.”
