A Glasgow sports retailer has landed a landmark deal with Adidas.

The city's oldest sports retailer Greaves has agreed to open Scotland's first House of Adidas  – and the new store is the only one in the UK outwith Harrods in London.

The family-owned and run sports retailer, which has been operating in Glasgow since the 1920s, new £1m development will be based in Greaves’ flagship Gordon Street store.

The house of Adidas opened today, taking the store to almost 13,000 sq ft and confirming Greaves’ position as the largest independent sports retailer in the country.

Sandy Greaves, Greaves managing director, hailed Adidas’ investment in Glasgow as a major boost for the city.

He said: “The new House of Adidas department is an incredible retail space. In terms of the range and experience it provides, this is the best of the best and you’d have to go to the fifth floor of Harrods to see anything like it.

“It’s great news for Greaves and our customers of course, but it’s also a real shot in the arm for the city of Glasgow that the world’s top sports brand would choose to partner with its oldest retailer, rather than open their own shop around the corner.”

Greaves’ House of Adidas facility is a haven for fans of the famous three-stripe brand, housing the innovative and technical performance product most associated with adidas and Greaves, in addition to Adidas Originals and Stella McCartney ranges.

The area has been designed to combine the digital world with the hands-on experience of a best in class traditional retail environment.

The 90-year old shop, which has been a retail mainstay of Glasgow’s city centre, has been transformed with the addition of a dramatic new stairwell lined with digital mannequins and surrounded by inspirational messaging from some of Adidas’ most iconic brand ambassadors including Lionel Messi, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Caroline Wozniacki and Yohan Blake.

Glasgow Times:

Phil Benton, VP of Sales for Adidas in the UK and Ireland, said: “With our long standing relationship, we are delighted to have partnered with Greaves and collaboratively opened a compelling 2,691 sq ft consumer experience to showcase our exciting product ranges in both sport and style.

“This shop-in-shop is a beacon for the brand in Glasgow that will allow the consumer to engage with adidas across many of its key concepts that are worn by both athletes on the field of play and fashion icons, showcased in this newly developed shop-in-shop that has never been seen before in Greaves.

“We look forward to continuing to build on our relationship with Greaves and wish them all the best in this new venture.”

Anne Murray, Inward Investment Manager at Invest Glasgow, added: “This is terrific news for Greaves and the wider retail sector in Glasgow city centre, and shows the continuing confidence that investors and developers have in Glasgow. I look forward to this new venture – a first for Scotland and the only one of its kind outside of London – being a great success.”
