In the latest in our series, style doctor Numba Pinkerton tackles a common fashion dilemma: how to wear prints.
Q: I love the colourful prints I see on the high street, but struggle to see how to wear them without drawing too much attention to myself. What is the best way to style prints?
A: One of the biggest fears my clients have when it comes to style is wearing prints. Thankfully, they’re much easier to wear than you think. With the new wave of eclecticism this season, there are endless options in the shops. All you need is the confidence to give it a go. Stick to these tips and you won't go wrong.
Keep the colour palette the same
The simplest way to mix prints is to keep the colour palette the same. Make sure one colour is repeated in both to pull them together – this will help balance your overall look. Showing some skin, such as your neckline, collarbone, forearms or ankles, will also prevent a pattern from overwhelming and you and look a million times better.
Wear with a solid neutral colour
It’s practically impossible for a pattern not to look good teamed with a classic shade. Navy is a universal colour which works with just about anything. If you feel you have an overwhelming pattern, simply team with a classic navy piece to tone it down.
Introduce pattern as an accessory
Accessories are an easy way to introduce pattern to your look. If you are wearing a plain outfit, adding a pair of patterned shoes will instantly update your look- adding class and sophistication.
