STATEMENT jewellery, quirky homeware and unique designer pieces - if you're still looking for that special Christmas present you might just find it on Glasgow-based online store Hey Sailor.

Set up just 18 months ago by jewellery-maker Nicola Mason, it is a treasure trove of glittering goodies for anyone with a magpie-like eye for sparkle.

There are bold necklaces in eye-catching colours, butterfly adorned purses and patent satchels as well as belts, beanie hats and quirky pieces of homeware as well as vintage buys.

Music graduate Nicola, from the South Side of Glasgow, set up Hey Sailor after going on to study silversmithing and making her own jewellery. She was looking for an outlet to sell her work and the business took off from there.

" I had the idea to have a place that doesn't just sell one designer's work, because it's really hard to market that and get people to keep coming back. So I decided I would have a shop that had something for everyone but tried to keep the prices low," explains Nicola.

" It just developed from there. I thought, if I'm going to sell my own stuff there I should sell other designers."

Nicola and her husband John Sutherland, who is also her business partner, now have a customer base that stretches around the world, from Australia to the US.

They have a growing following of fans in Scotland, thanks to their regular appearances at craft fairs. See them this Sunday at Granny Would be Proud at Hillhead Bookclub.

" I'm always looking for something a wee bit different, something unusual," says Nicola when describing what takes her eye when she is buying stock.

"We don't always go with that is on the catwalk, we are more about cute, funky, quirky pieces that are fashionable all year round."

The designer range features work hand-made in the UK, including distinctive prints from Holly Sharpe, who produced a range for Marks & Spencer earlier in the year, and jewellery and cards from Scottish illustrator and jewellery-maker Claire Barclay.

Homeward ranges from storage tins and chalkboards to cushions, vintage tea sets and prints.

For last-minute shoppers who just can't decide what to choose from Hey Sailor, buy an online gift card and keep an eye out for the sale after Christmas to bag a few bargains.
